Private legal practitioner, Martin Luther Kpebu, has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to identify a candidate with strong winning potential to represent them in the December 2028 general elections.

He has expressed skepticism about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is reportedly leading in recent surveys among the party’s potential flagbearers, citing his disappointing showing in the 2024 elections as a significant concern.

Kpebu suggests the NPP should reconsider and opt for a candidate with an unblemished profile, implying Bawumia’s candidacy might not be the party’s best bet for victory in the next general polls.

Mr. Kpebu asserts that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s association with former President William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration is a significant liability for his candidature and the NPP as a whole.

He believes Dr. Bawumia’s role as Vice President during Akufo-Addo’s two-term presidency makes him accountable for the hardships Ghanaians endured, rendering him unappealing to many voters.

Kpebu’s position follows recent polling data from Global InfoAnalytics indicating Dr. Bawumia leads the NPP flagbearer race but faces declining popularity.

Speaking on the KeyPoints on TV3 on Saturday, October 25, 2025, lawyer Kpebu emphasised that the NPP must select a candidate who resonates with undecided voters like himself, if they hope to secure victory in the upcoming 2028 general elections.

“The last election speaks volumes, that’s even putting it mildly, we should be using a stronger term, a man who went to the election and got 41 point something per cent, and the contest is that he has supported President Akufo-Addo to unleash terror, famine, death, so much misery on Ghanaians,” he stated.

The renowned lawyer added that “such a candidate doesn’t appeal to Ghanaians.”

Mr. Kpebu urged the party to identify a candidate capable of attracting non-party members, rather than persisting with Dr. Bawumia, whom he believes has been tested and found unappealing electorally.

“What we should be looking at is, do you have a candidate who will be appealing to floating voters like me? That is what they should be looking at.”

He concluded that the NPP is misleading themselves by banking on Bawumia’s candidacy for electoral victory.

“And so this one it’s like they are tickling themselves and laughing. Bawumia won’t appeal to floating voters,” he reiterated, underscoring his skepticism about Dr. Bawumia’s broader electoral appeal.
