Former NPP MMDCEs with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who have declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lack principle, according to political analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere.

Dr. Otchere says the former MMDCEs actions are inconsistent, having had a meeting with several flag bearer aspirants, including Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, before endorsing Dr. Bawumia.

According to Dr. Otchere, it would have been better for the group to remain neutral or wait before making such a declaration following their meetings with them.

“If they are really principled, they would have kept mute over this, keep their cards to their chest, and then probably wait a little longer for either a declaration or a period to go and cast their ballot,” he indicated.

Dr. Otchere suggested that the group’s support for Bawumia appears to be driven by opportunism and a lack of principle, rather than a genuine endorsement.

“I don’t want to think that the highest bidder is the one controlling affairs because having visited Ken Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong for that matter, they would definitely be given some kind of honorarium as a kind gesture,” adding that with the former MMDCEs being part of the party’s kingmakers, the flag bearer aspirants “may want to do right by them.”

“But it surprises me that they took that particular decision. I think that it was an unprincipled decision, it was just borne out of political prostitution,” he reemphasised.

His comments come after the former MMDCEs who served under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, firmly denied endorsing Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy in the upcoming race scheduled for January 31, 2026.

After their meeting with Mr. Agyapong on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament announced that the former MMDCEs had declared their support for him.

But addressing a press conference on Monday, June 23, former Adentan MCE, Ebenezer Doku, —who confirmed his presence at the meeting— dismissed the claim as entirely inaccurate.

“Kennedy Agyapong invited all of us; I was there,” he said. “But we did not throw our support behind him. His assertion that over 250 MMDCEs came to endorse him is false.”

Mr Doku described the meeting as an informal social gathering rather than a political endorsement event.

“We are reading a statement today on behalf of all of us. No statement was read during the meeting. We spoke, wined and dined, and then we left,” he explained. “Today, we are making this clear with an official statement.”

The group of former MMDCEs highlighted three key points in their clarification:
They did not endorse Kennedy Agyapong during or after the meeting.
No formal or informal support was given.
Reports suggesting widespread backing are false and misleading.

“This is our only official position. Any other claims are wrong and should be ignored,” the group concluded.
