The Bia West District Assembly has announced plans to strengthen its by-laws on sanitation to enhance environmental cleanliness and promote public health across the district.

The decision follows the National Sanitation Day exercise held at Sefwi Elluokrom on Saturday, December 20, 2025, led by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Matthew Annor.

According to the DCE, the National Sanitation Day initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to promote a healthy and cleaner environment.

He emphasized that the exercise has significantly helped in creating awareness about proper waste management and environmental hygiene, though some residents still face challenges in maintaining sanitation standards.

He noted that the assembly has been engaging and educating residents on the importance of good hygiene practices. The DCE stated that the December exercise marked the final sanitation activity for 2025, adding that next year, the assembly would reinforce its sanitation by-laws to curb infractions and ensure cleaner communities.

Annor encouraged residents to adopt cleanliness as a daily habit to help maintain a safe and healthy environment throughout the district.

Assembly Member for the Elluokrom Electoral Area, Mr. Louis Afful, commended the assembly for selecting Elluokrom for the fourth round of the exercise. He pledged to continue mobilizing community members to actively participate in future sanitation activities and appealed for more waste bins to be placed along major streets to help manage refuse effectively.

The District Environmental Health Officer, Mr. John Tetteh Duku, observed that the sanitation initiative has led to positive changes in the district, with a noticeable reduction in malaria and other sanitation-related diseases.

He added that public understanding of the need to maintain a clean environment has improved, but emphasized the need for continuous education and sensitization to sustain the progress achieved.
