Two persons have been shot dead at Atuba, a suburb of the Binduri district in the Upper East region.
The Monday, March 17, 2025 shooting is suspected to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.
The incident had gunmen on motorbikes opening fire on traders at a busy marketplace, with the two victims dying instantly after being hit by the bullets.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed, a veterinary officer in the area, and the other, a local pastor.
Although security agencies have not identified the real motive behind the attack, it is believed to be connected to the longstanding Bawku conflict which has claimed several lives and destroyed properties.
This latest violence brings the death toll to approximately 76 since the conflict resurfaced in October 2024.
Meanwhile, top Ghanaian leaders including the Asantehene continue mediation efforts to restore peace and end the crisis, with President Mahama making the enclave his first destination after being sworn in as President to broker peace.
