The Blue Water Guards under the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly have halted the operations of illegal miners whose activities were worsening the turbidity levels of the River Ankobra.
The operation took place at Bayerigya, a community in the Prestea Huni Valley municipality, where the miners had shockingly set up their site right beside the main road linking Hiawa to Bayerigya, operating in full view of residents.
Besides, the illegal miners had directed their wastewater outlet into the Ankobra River, washing debris and silt directly into the water body.
During the exercise, the guards seized two water pumping machines and destroyed washing boards and other mining equipment used in the illegal activity. However, no arrests were made, as the miners fled upon seeing the task force.
Commander of the Blue Water Guards, Allan Acheampong, declared a renewed war on illegal mining along the Ankobra River, vowing that his team would not relent in its efforts to protect and restore the water body.
“We are committed to safeguarding and restoring the Ankobra River. That is our goal, and we will go to every length within our means to achieve it,” Acheampong stated.
He further pledged to maintain 24-hour surveillance on the site to prevent the return of the miners.
