The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, has explained why his outfit is insisting the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) provides evidence for its concerns on the voters’ register.

The Electoral Commission, has upon a request by the NDC to conduct a forensic audit on the voters’ register, has asked the party to submit evidence to the claims despite indicating the errors the party detected have been corrected.

When asked by Keminni Amanor, host of TV3’s Hot Issues Sunday, September 29, 2024, why the EC is still demanding evidence after saying the errors have been rectified, Dr. Bossman Asare said “for you to be double sure that your concerns have been addressed, come to the discussion table, come with your issues.”

He explained that “when we had the meeting with the NDC, they showed us one of the missing names. Instantly our IT boss who was in that particular meeting showed them that this particular person you’re saying is missing from the register, the person is actually in the register.

“And beyond that we can provide the evidence but when we finish with the exhibition, we have a process where those whose names been rejected, those whose names have been removed from the register, we go through a legal process where we have somebody called District Registration Officer who is usually an officer of the court, and we go through that procedure and those processes are about to be completed.”

The NDC has demanded from the electoral Commission, a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register to correct some errors it says it detected from the roll during the exhibition.

This led the party to organise a demonstration on September 17, 2024, on all 16 regional capitals, to present a petition to the Commission to that effect after the EC said it wasn’t heeding to the request for the audit.

Meanwhile, the Commission is calling for a meeting between the stakeholders saying it has not exhausted all the processes in its outfit yet.

“…the Commission is of the view that the legal and administrative processes laid down to clean the PVR have not been fully exhausted to justify the calls for a Forensic Audit. We entreat the public to trust us to carry out our mandate,” the Commission in a statement it released in response to the NDC stated.
