The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced an increase in the prize money of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
According to CAF President Dr Patrick Motsepe, the prize money for the winners of this year’s tournament will be increased from $1 million to $2 million.
“We’ve increased the prize money by 900 percent,” Dr. Motsepe said at a global press conference on Wednesday, July 22.
“Last year, when I became the President, the winner of the women’s competition got $200,000 and then we got into $1 million. Now, they have $2 million.
“So, you win we’ve increased the prize money for the winner by 100 percent.”
The CAF President also indicated that the total amount of investment into women’s football is currently close to $6 million from $975,000 years ago.
Last year’s WAFCON was won by Nigeria’s Super Falcons, who will be seeking to extend their record in this year’s tournament, scheduled to be held from Sunday, July 26 to Sunday, August 16 in Morocco.
The record champions are in Group C together with Egypt, Malawi and Zambia.
