The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the striking Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to resume their “illegal” industrial action with immediate effect.
This follows a failure on the part of the GRNMA leadership to appear before the NLC, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Ministries of Finance and Health to get their concerns addressed.
In a statement issued by the NLC on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, it said the Commission invited the striking Association to come for a meeting with the aforementioned entities for a negotiation but failed to do.
According to the statement, the Association was asked to suspended its intended action whilst the negotiation takes place but failed to do so.
The NLC in its statement is therefore directing the GRNMA to resume to work with immediate effect, whilst its leadership engages the FWSC on their concerns.
It indicates that the nurses and midwives’ failure to attend the said meeting is a breach of their regulations regarding the notice leading to the strike.
“The Commission notes that the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association failed to comply with Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) regarding notice leading to such industrial action,” it stated, adding that the strike is illegal and must be called off immediately.
“The Commission declares the Industrial action by Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association as illegal and directs them to call it off with immediate effect. That members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association resume work at their respective facilities immediately.
“That the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association continue with its engagement with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on the implementation of the Collective Agreement and report the outcome to the Commission by 25th June, 2025 a 2:30pm,” portions of the statement indicated.
The GRNMA is on strike over some conditions of services which it says the government has failed to fulfill for them.
