One thing the John Dramani Mahama administration would regret for doing would be to touch anything in the constitution which Ghanaians by consensus do not want it changed.
Calls are rife on the need to amend the constitution to meet current trends due to certain provisions in the current document outliving their usefulness.
With its overwhelming majority in the 9th Parliament which would be inaugurated on January 07, 2025, Professor Stephen Adei, a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), is urging the NDC to use its numbers to effect many of the changes Ghanaians are calling for.
According to him, there are certain provisions which by consensus, have been agreed by Ghanaians to be changed, and can be done with the incoming government’s two-thirds majority in Parliament.
He suggests there are many things in the Professor Fiadjoe Commission report which can be tweaked to meet current needs to serve the nation’s democracy, advising the government to desist from any other thing that is entrenched and would require a referendum to change.
The former Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), whilst speaking on Hot Issues on TV3 Sunday, December 22, 2024, noted that amending what’s in the Fiadjoe Commission’s report is what Ghanaians will accept due to the composition of the Commission and the work it did, saying anything other than that will not be tolerated by the masses.
“…but I think that they can do a lot and tackle the obvious ones and not touch the core our our constitution, it has served us for these years. But things like the independence of the NDPC, the election of DCEs, I think that they can tweak it but if they undermine the integrity of our constitution, other than those Ghanaians by consensus, through the Fiajoe [committee] have agreed upon, they will leave to regret it,” he stated.
