The Director of Elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, is confident the party will win the 2024 elections irrespective of the date the Electoral Commission holds the polls.

The NPP’s comment comes after the opposition NDC had reiterated its objection to the proposal to change the election date from December to November.

Speaking to the media after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting Monday, January 29, 2024, Mr. Nimako indicated that the NDC’s opposition to the amendment stems from a proposal they made in 2016 which did not see the light of day after going through Parliament.

According to him, the NPP, following the challenges with the transition process bought into the idea of changing the date. However, they will leave the process in the care of the Commission to come with their timelines.

Mr. Nimako was confident the NPP will win whether the date is maintained or otherwise.

“What we have now is December 07 and we are all aware of the challenges that has to do with transition and so it is the reason why the New Patriotic Party said that if the EC will be able to put resources together, then they can have the November 07. That’s why we supported it. And I’m saying that if it doesn’t change to November 07, the New Patriotic Party is still definitely going to win with the December 07 we’ve always had,” he stated.

Change of election date: NDC reinforces opposition to November proposal

“The NDC says no and so we now leave everything in the care of the EC to come out with their programme lineup for the year so we see how it goes. The NDC are saying no because they had in 2016 proposed the November 7 idea and had sponsored it even in Parliament, except that it could not pass. And today that we would have gotten enough time to prepare towards December 07, or what it be, November 07, they say no. For us as New Patriotic Party, we leave it in the care of the EC. We’ve also said that it is important we broadly consult so that every decision the EC will take will be what will enhance our democracy,” he added.
