The People’s National Party (PNP) has sent warm wishes to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as he turns 61 today, October 7, 2024.
The PNP urged the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Candidate to reflect on the state of “our beloved country” in its birthday message.
It particularly mentioned the illegal mining menace also known as ‘galamsey’, which has witnessed the indiscriminate destruction of forest reserves and pollution of water bodies.
“The future of our nation is at risk,” the party’s statement issued by Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, mentioned.
“I believe your birthday presents a unique opportunity to address this urgent matter. While banning galamsey may seem politically challenging, fearing its potential impact on your election fortunes, you still have a window to act decisively.
“I encourage you to consult with the President and the Speaker of Parliament to call for an emergency parliamentary meeting, where a ban on all galamsey activities can be placed and also impose a ban on politicians from using galamsey as a tool to campaign.
“By doing so, it won’t be your government alone taking the step, but the collective will of Ghanaians. If you wait until after the elections to tackle this issue, there may not be much of a country left to govern. Taking serious action now will not only protect our natural resources and our people, but it will also secure the future of Ghana for generations to come.
“Happy birthday once again, and may this occasion inspire you to lead in solving the galamsey crisis for the sake of our nation’s future,” the statement detailed.
