Residents of the Zongo Community at Chiraa in the Sunyani West municipality of the Bono region have raised concerns over the unlawful interment at the Muslim cemetery in the area.

They have cautioned the residents who have been indulging in the act to desist from it or have the bodies of their buried relatives being exhumed.

The Zongo youth have warned to exhume any remains from the cemetery if perpetrators continue to trespass the land earmarked for Muslim burials.

Spokesperson for the Chiraa Zongo Community, Alhassan Mohammed, speaking to Onua News’ Richard Manu indicated that, chiefs in the town have given lands to all fate-based organisations and cannot fathom why some Christians have chosen to bury their relatives on their land.

He said they made the disclosure during the burial of one of their colleagues where they discovered that three other non-Muslims were being buried at the place, an act they have described as abominable to the Islamic faith.

“The chiefs have given us lands for our cemetery and all the churches have theirs. But recently we realised some of our Christian brethren have come to bury people here so we stopped them in order not to create any chaos. When we arrived last Sunday, we saw them repeating it and some of our boys even got angry and exhumed some of the bodies,” he stated.

Alhaji Isaka is a member of the Council of Zongo elders who also asked that no one trespasses the other’s territory since every church in the town have their cemetery just as the Muslims.

“Just as the chiefs provided lands for each of the churches, everyone should be in their lane. We wouldn’t go to anyone’s territory and it is same way we wouldn’t allow anyone to trespass ours to avoid any fight. In Chiraa, Christians and Muslims are one people,” he stated.

He pleaded on the authorities to ensure the situation is averted else they will exhume the bodies of any non-Muslim buried at their cemetery.
