The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly called Kwame A Plus, has added his voice to the calls for the laws of contempt of Court and Parliament to be reviewed to ensure more fairness in the discharge of justice.

The MP in a post on X Thursday, January 30, 2025, observed that the current practice whereby the very institutions charging someone for contempt are the same to determine the merit of their charges is unjust and calls on the Constitutional Review Committee to take a look at it.

“How can we expect an accused person to receive a fair trial when the same individual or group acts as both the victim and the judge? This is exactly what was done to Jesus Christ of Nazareth – those who despised him were the ones who sat in judgment over him.

“My life has been dedicated to fighting for the weak, the vulnerable, and minority groups. I firmly believe that it is highly inappropriate and a blatant abuse of power for anyone to be a judge in their own case. The laws on contempt of court and parliament should be reviewed by the Constitutional Review Committee” his social media post contained.

A Plus suggested that an independent body could be constituted to handle the cases of contempt in order to ensure fairness.

“Perhaps an independent body should be established to handle contempt cases, ensuring that any member who is personally involved as a victim must recuse themselves before the case is heard” Mr. Asare Obeng proposed.
