Private legal practitioner, Martin Luther Kpebu, has said that former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is representing suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, to ‘rehabilitate’ himself.

According to Kpebu, the revelations from the tape admitted into evidence by the High Court regarding Dame and Richard Jakpa in the ambulance purchase trial depict how unethical the former A-G was, and he’s using this case to wipe away the shame.

Kpebu asserts that by wading into the Chief Justice’s issue, Dame believes people will talk about it, covering up his deeds in the ambulance purchase trial as contained on the tape.

The lawyer avers that irrespective of the outcome of the petition before the General Legal Council (GLC) to sanction Dame, the content on the tape will forever be attributed to him once it was admitted into evidence in court.

The suspended Chief Justice (CJ), Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking to halt the ongoing probe into petitions calling for her removal from office.

The CJ, in her application to the apex court, has engaged Godfred Yeboah Dame, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, as her lawyer.

The suit, filed on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, seeks an interlocutory injunction to restrain the President’s committee from proceeding with its investigation pending the final determination of the case.

Additionally, she seeks to bar Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu from presiding over or participating in the committee’s deliberations.

Speaking in a telephone interview on TV3’s Big Issue on New Day Thursday, May 22, 2025, Martin Kpebu maintained that by choosing to defend the Chief Justice on her petition, other information may come out that may be worse than how the optics appear at the moment.

“Other things will come up. Other news and information will come up that will make this choice more terrible than it already appears,” he stated.

“For Godfred Dame, this case is also serving as rehabilitation for him because of the terrible things he did in the Jakpa tape, he thinks by coming to court, wading into these conversations and people talking about it, after a while, we’ll stop talking about the Jakpa thing. But it’s a lie. We’ll not stop talking about the Jakpa thing until Godfred Dame is sanctioned by the disciplinary committee of the General Legal Council, that’s the court where lawyers who breach their ethics are sanctioned,” he explained further.

The renowned lawyer advised Madam Torkornoo to find a new representation for herself, describing her choice of Dame as a “terrible engagement.”

“So the best for the Chief Justice to do is to disengage Godfred Dame. Godfred Dame leading her in this case is a very terrible engagement,” he maintained.
