Some illicit drugs and other illegal substances confiscated by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and the Ghana Police Service in a joint operation in the Savannah Region have been destroyed.

These substances were seized during a targeted enforcement actions aimed at tackling the increasing menace of drug trafficking and its abuse.

Meanwhile, six individuals arrested in connection with the substances have been convicted with a fine of not less than 500 penalty units each by the Damongo Circuit Court.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, has said the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has stepped up security efforts in the region, lauding the court’s direction for the illicit substances to be destroyed.

“This is just a part of the ongoing exercise that we have actually taken up very seriously. We are happy the court is giving these sanctions and asking for the destruction of these illicit substances,” he said on Channel One TV.

The establishment of a district and municipal offices for NACOC, according to Rashida Ewuntomah, the Savannah Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission, will boost the Commission’s capacity to combat drug trafficking.
