Okomfo Baffour Gyau, a member of the Fetish Priests Association of Ghana, has disclosed that many river deities have become powerless as a result of illegal mining a.k.a. ‘galamsey’.

According to the Abofrem community-based fetish priest in the Ashanti region, crimes have exacerbated in recent times as a result of the some sacred deities that have been rendered impotent.

He said the fear and reverence which these deities commanded previously are no more, making people steal and engage in other forms of vices because curses are no longer having effect on them.

“The galamsey menace has turned all the spirits in the rivers that were guarding the nation helpless,” he claimed. “At first there was high fear for someone to steal, but today robbery is increasing daily because curses don’t work,” he disclosed.

Speaking at the 14th Yam Festival in the Bibiani Old Town, where a number of traditional priests displayed their antics, he also said there are many diseases in the country being caused by bad human activities as a result of the same issue.

“Now there is a high death rate and other outbreaks of diseases in the country that are caused by the bad activities of human beings because our river bodies have lost their power of protection,” added Okomfo Baffour Gyau.
