The National Service Scheme (NSS) has rejected the assertion that its latest policy that seeks to deploy some personnel outside the jurisdictions of the country will suffer political interference.

The Scheme says the policy that has been incorporated in the recently passed National Service Bill that seeks to make the Scheme an Authority, has all the rudiments to make the initiative free from political interference.

Explaining the policy to OnuaOnline in an exclusive interview Wednesday, July 17, 2024, Public Relations Officer of the NSS, Armstrong Esaah, indicated that the Authority, as the bill will bring forth upon assent of the bill by the President, will make the overseas deployment so open to avoid any political interference.

He reiterated the Scheme’s commitment to ensuring fairness in the implementation to avoid exploitation by politicians.

“Any government that comes to power and wants to alter any of the provisions within the 10-year policy that has been approved by parliament and waiting for the President’s assent, the person has to go back to Parliament so that Parliament can do that amendment.

“So I can assure you that the implementation is going to be very fair. Enough documentation has been done. And this is not going to happen just out of the blue,” he explained.

Mr. Esaah continued the the recent proposal between Ghana and the Gambia for instance, has seen several other documents prepared including implementation document, communication document as well as committees that will seek to the implementation of the initiative.

“But even with the current one we are talking of, which is the Ghana-Gambia arrangement partnership, a lot will go into it.

He explained that the programme only captures personnel with teaching background and it is the host country that will decide the number of personnel it needs.

“And it is for only our personnel with the pedagogy training. And Gambia will decide how many they want us to deploy to them. And then, based upon that, a lot of people will be part of the selection committee and the processes”

Talking about the selection process, he responded that “we aren’t there yet. And I know when we get there, management will open up the entire system to the public so that they can look at it, make input into it. But we can assure the public that the process as has been prepared now is going to be so transparent and it will be out of the interference of politicians.”
