Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Kwame Andy Appiah-Kubi, has called for the depoliticisation of the illegal mining (galamsey) menace.
He says the fight will not succeed once politics comes in.
“Let us not point political fingers, it will not work if you point, once you go political, the fight will fail,” he said on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, November 8.
Also commenting on the same show, the Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has said that political will and commitment are required to tackle the illegal small-scale mining.
Without the political will and commitment, it will be difficult, she said.
“We need to have the political will, the commitment,” she said on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, November 8.
She further observed that the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is under-resourced in the fight against galamsey.
“NAIMOS is under-resourced, so even when communities are pleading with them to come and deal with the situation, they are unable to do so,” she said.
She added, “You need to properly resource NAIMOS, and when they are attacked, something should be done about it. They don’t even have a number you can reach them on.”
