A New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has advised delegates of the party to elect a flagbearer that will not embarrass the country at the global stage, should he be elected President.
He says the NPP needs a leader who is calm and has the suitable temperament to lead the party’s presidential race in 2028.
Atta Akyea, speaking to delegates at Mpraeso in the Eastern region Wednesday, November 26, 2025, he said: “Let’s not make a mistake and elect someone who will insult world leaders when he travels to the United Nations.”
The former Member of Parliament admonished the gathering to choose the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he said possesses “the temperament, maturity and statesmanship required to engage constructively with the international community.”
The comments come amid the NPP’s upcoming presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a new flag bearer for the December 2028 general elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is among the five aspirants vying for the position, after obtaining the party’s lowest ever percentage in any general election since 1996, after the party boycotted the 1992 exercise.
The other contenders are former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who is Bawumia’s main contender, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Abbey Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former General Secretary of the party Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
