After the dramatic events of September 13, 2024, when Dr. Nii Amu Darko and the Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) flagbearer, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, submitted their presidential nominations after the official deadline, the independent candidate is preparing to challenge any unfavorable ruling from the Electoral Commission (EC).

Despite arriving at the EC headquarters before 4:00pm, Dr. Darko’s candidacy now hangs in the balance, and he is ready to contest any decision to disqualify him from the 2024 presidential race.

In an impassioned statement after the submission, Dr. Nii Amu Darko expressed his frustration with the EC’s decision to receive his forms but not necessarily accept them, indicating that he believes he met the filing requirements.

He recalled arriving well before the deadline and compared the situation to being in a shop before closing time.

“We were in the building around 3:40 p.m.,” Dr. Darko explained.

“The reason [for the delay] was not because we were filling the forms here. I hope that they will accept it. If they don’t and there is an avenue to challenge, I will.”

Dr. Darko made it clear that he would not take the decision lightly and would pursue legal options if he felt the EC’s judgment was unjust.

He emphasized the importance of fair treatment, using a shop analogy to highlight his case. “If you are in the shop, and the shop closes at 8:00pm, and you are in the shop at 8:00pm, they won’t sack you. I was here before 4.”
