The Mobile Money Vendors Association of Ghana says even though they are happy government has heeded their calls for reducing the e-levy rate, they will still call for further reduction.

According to the association, they asked the government to peg the rate between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent. However, it managed a reduction to 1% from the initial 1.5%.

Speaking on Onua TV/FM Maakye Wednesday, January 11, 2023, General Secretary of the Association, Evans Otumfuo said they are expecting patronage to go up due to the drop in the rate.

“We told government to reduce the rate from 0.1 to 0.5 but government said they can only do 1%. We see it as a good news even though we will call for further reduction in our future engagements.
We are expecting an appreciation of the patronage due to the reduction. We are hoping to see a further reduction in either the midyear review or the 2024 Budget,” he expressed.

According to Otumfuo, the Association organised a survey and presented the findings to the government to consider to review the rate.

“Before the 2023 Budget presentation, we made a survey and it came out that people were being laid off [from work] because of the burden of the levy. We submitted the data to the Ministry of Finance and we expect them to reduce it drastically [in future],” he added.

For instance, Otumfuo indicated the rate of the interoperability operation shot up the moment government reduced the levy on it.

He added that, his outfit is going to make a comparison between the new rate and the previous one to ascertain the legibility of asking for the reduction.

“When the data for the 1.5% is compared with the 1% and they realise there is an increase in the revenue, they will see the need to reduce it further.”
