Chief of Okwenya in the Lower Manya Municipality of the Eastern Region, Nene Sakinor Olepeme, has asked the Managing Director (MD) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to revisit the law school.

His comment come on the back of a statement from the ECG MD saying the provision of power for Krobo residents is a privilege and not a right.

But Nene, who was surprised about the comments coming from a lawyer said he needed to go back to law school because, it is the right of Krobo residents to get power and not a privilege.

Nene was commenting on the impasse between the ECG and residents of Krobo leading to the two municipaties, Yilo and Manya Krobo experiencing power outage for three weeks and counting.

Speaking on Maakye on Onua TV/FM Wednesday, August 17, 2022, Nene noted the ECG can choose not to provide the power again since they’ve seen the worst already.

“…This is the issue we are talking about and the MD told us getting power is a privilege not a right. And I learnt he is a lawyer. Then he should go back to the law school because getting power is our right not a privilege.

“Now we are tired. The ECG can take their power if they won’t give us again. Whatever would be destroyed have been destroyed and there is nothing more for us to protect,” he vented.

Meanwhile, the Tema East PRO of the ECG, Sakyiwaa Mensah speaking on the show noted she is not aware when the power would be restored for the residents. They, are however, undertaking some exercise in parts of the communities to restore some earth cables that have been stolen since the outage.

The ECG-Krobo melee has existed for ages from one administration to the other without the issue being brought to a finality. There have been demonstrations that resulted to clashes between security officials and the residents where some people lost their lives with others maimed.

Even though the ECG has said it has ringfenced a debt the residents owed from 2014 to 2018, the have issues with the power distribution company over the two year period given them to defray their 2018 to 2021 arrears.

The residents say the errors in the tariffs given them wave their trust in the Company regarding the prepaid metres they’re supplying them.

Due to attacks that were meted out to officials of the ECG in the communities, they employed the services of the military to escort them carry out the prepaid metre installation they were doing.
