The Electricity Company of Ghana’s Achimota Bulk Supply Station was submerged in floodwaters on June 29 following heavy downpours, forcing a precautionary shutdown.
Acting Managing Director Kwame Kpekpena explained that the basement, which houses cables feeding into the switch gear, was inundated, making it unsafe to continue supply.
“It was no longer safe to supply power, so we had to cut off from the GRIDCo side to protect lives,” he said.
The shutdown left several areas, including 37, UGMC, the University of Ghana, Jubilee House, and Burma Camp, without electricity. Kpekpena confirmed that flooding also affected the Mallam Bulk Supply Point, leading to further outages.
He noted that as water levels have subsided, ECG is preparing to restore power, though not all affected areas will be reconnected immediately.
“High‑ground areas will be restored first, while low‑lying areas will be monitored to ensure safety before supply resumes,” he explained.
Kpekpena stressed that the situation is being closely monitored and warned that if flooding recurs, the substation will be shut down again. He attributed the incident to choked drains around the facility, which allowed water to enter the basement.
“The flooding at the substation is not ECG’s problem alone. There is a huge drain behind the station that gets blocked, causing storm drains to overflow. We will work with NADMO and city authorities to ensure this does not happen again,” he added.
