Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has appealed to the people of Efutu and Gomoa to de-escalate tensions following a violent land dispute in the Central Region that reportedly left three people dead and at least 15 others injured.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the violence occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when a group of armed individuals from three communities—Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Pomadze and Gomoa Yenkuadze—allegedly attacked residents of a newly developed settlement known as New Winneba.
The attackers are said to be laying claim to the land on which New Winneba is situated. During the confrontation, several shops and properties belonging to residents of the community were reportedly destroyed.
Speaking during a radio broadcast, the Minority Leader appealed to both the Gomoa and Efutu communities to “smoke the peace pipe” and work towards restoring calm.
He stressed that the two groups share deep historical and cultural ties and should not allow a newly emerging conflict to undermine their longstanding relationship.
“Efutu and Gomoa were not built on violence,” Afenyo-Markin said, urging the parties involved to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
The Minority Leader also called for unity ahead of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations, warning that the escalating tensions could develop into a wider conflict and disrupt the festivities if not addressed swiftly.
In a broader appeal for peace, Afenyo-Markin called on residents and stakeholders across the Central Region to remain calm and work towards resolving the dispute through peaceful means.
He encouraged harmonious relations between the people of Gomoa and Efutu, emphasising that dialogue and unity remain essential to preserving peace and stability in the region.
