There is nothing spectacular about the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to cause the opposition NDC to shiver, should he be named as running mate to the NPP flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Franklin Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who is making the assertion says his party will be happy should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) present Dr. Opoku Prempeh since he brings nothing new to the table.
Fifi Kwetey says the Energy Minister and the Vice President put together will be a team without honour, considering the supposed running mate’s inability to even accept the energy crisis in his sector and proffering solutions to it.
“We are talking about a team that is simply not known for honour, so I don’t understand why anybody will panic about that,” Fifi Kwetey has said.
In a yet to be televised interview with Keminni Amanor on TV3’s Hot issues Sunday, June 30, 2024, Mr. Kwetey wondered how his party would be scared of someone who has exhibited incompetence in resolving a power challenge that has bedeviled the State since the last quarter of 2023.
“What is spectacular about Matthew Opoku Prempeh? He’s been in charge of the energy sector. He has not even got what we call the honour and the capacity to accept that we have an energy crisis. Is that not an absence of principles? If you have an individual who simply has not the courage to tell the truth, joining a flag bearer who himself is known for what we call perpetual deception and lies?”
Media General’s presidential correspondent, Nana Kwaku Adua has reported that the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has presented Energy Minister and Manhyia South lawmaker, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
“NPP flag bearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last night met President Akufo-Addo to formally inform him about his choice for running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
“He will meet the Council of Elders to formally inform them about his choice by the close of the week, the announcement is likely to be made close of the week or early next month,” Nana Adua reported Wednesday, June 26, 2024 on TV3’s News Central.
The news comes at a time when a survey purported to be coming from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), tipped Dr. Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate to Dr. Bawumia.
The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.
According to the poll, Dr. Opoku Prempeh secured 76% more than the next person who was preferred by the party people, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education who served as deputy under Opoku Prempeh in Akufo-Addo’s first term.
