The former Vice President and the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed why the party lost the December 7, 2024 elections.
Addressing party members in Takoradi on April 26, as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region, Dr Bawumia indicated that some investigations undertaken about the party’s loss are revealing.
“We refused to listen. The big issues that people complained about were; cost of living, arrogance of power and the debt restructuring program. The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios. We never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened,” the 2024 flagbearer lamented.

He explained that the number of affected persons by these decisions were a significant number of voters and thus chose not to vote for the NPP in 2024.
For his part, a 2024 Presidential aspirant of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong has called on the party to grant all suspended party executives amnesty.
He said this is necessary as part of the party’s reconciliation and healing process.
Kennedy Agyapong stresses that such a consideration is the surest way to enable the party unite to wrestle political power in 2028.
Kennedy Agyapong was addressing party members in Takoradi on April 26, as part of the NPP’s Thank You tour in the Western Region. He argued that the humiliating defeat the party suffered in the 2024 general elections could partly be attributed to the poor manner in which the party handled its disciplinary actions against some officers.
In his opinion, many of the suspended officials such as Paul Afoko and Alan Kyerematen must be recalled into the party, if the NPP wishes to unite and rebuild its political strength for the next election.
“If we ever stand a chance to unite, I charge the national executives to grant amnesty to Afoko, Alan and everybody who has been suspended by the party. Let’s recall them to the party and unite,” he reiterated.
He continued that it would be in the interest of the executives and the party, to apologize to any member who has been offended.
“I will stand on behalf of the NPP party to apologize to everybody NPP has offended.
“What I am talking about is not about ego. It is about peace. It should not be difficult for any of us here to admit we have wronged a lot of our party people, hence their decision not to vote for us.”
