Nana Ohene Ntow, a special policy advisor to Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to give recognition to independent candidates in the country since they have become one of the major stakeholders in Ghana’s elections.

According to him, just as the Commission created the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on its own discretion, it should do same by granting the independent candidates the recognition they deserve.

He, therefore, appealed to the Commission to provide copies of the provisional voters’ register to the independent candidates who are equally required to fill their nominations with endorsements from persons duly captured in the register just as the other political parties.

Speaking at the launch of TV3 and 3FM’s Election Command Centre Thursday, August 29, 2024, he noted that “we also want to appeal to the Electoral Commission that now that the independent is here to stay, the Electoral Commission should not wait and say that we have to register as an independent, submit our nomination before the EC can deal with an independent prospective.”

He continued that, “it is a phenomenon that is recognised and we want to use this platform to appeal to the EC, we also want a copy of the provisional register because you expect us to bring you the nomination forms, fill according to all the rules.

“After all, IPAC for example, is not a statutory body it is by the EC’s own discretion adn I’m sure the EC can use the same discretion to recognise those individuals who have put themselves up to serve this nation at that level.”
