Representative for Tamale South constituents in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, is alleging that the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the calls for audit of the voters’ register, is being influenced by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3 Sunday, September 22, 2024, the Member of Parliament alleged that the Electoral Commission’s refusal to engage a third party for a forensic audit of the electoral roll is because the NPP is behind it.
He alleges it is because the Commission has something to hide that it is running from the demands to expunge the foreign materials from the register.
“Have you seen somebody running in a market who hasn’t stolen? In a market, you see somebody running in the midst of people, it means there’s something wrong. Why are you running? Let the Electoral Commission live up to its calling as an independent commission, independent of government, independent of political manipulation, including the ruling New Patriotic Party,” he told host, Keminni Amanor.
According to the former Minority Leader, the Commission is in bed with the government to keep the NPP in power, something he says not only the NDC, but Ghanaians as a whole will reject.
“And that the Electoral Commission should not be seen conniving with actors who have interest in safeguarding their stay or prolonging their stay in power. That is not acceptable and that will be resisted by not just the NDC, but by Ghanaians and those who cherish and love our democracy,” he added.
His comments follow the Electoral Commission’s refusal to conduct an audit of the voters’ register which the NDC has described as bloated.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 hit the streets across all the regions in the country and presented a petition to the EC’s regional offices demanding for a forensic audit of the voters’ roll.
The NDC had said that the integrity of the roll had been compromised, having detected some illegal transfer of voters from one constituency to the other without the knowledge of the persons involved.
After presenting its evidence to the EC, the Commission told the NDC that the errors have all been rectified.
Meanwhile, the NDC is asking the Commission to involve a third party to conduct a forensic audit, saying there are more illegal transfers, amid the EC’s refusal to provide evidence of what it claims it has corrected after the attention was drawn to the anomalies.
