Former President John Dramani Mahama has said there was so much peace in Ghana during his reign compared to what is being experienced now.
The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) admits that although everything was not perfect at the time, things were far better than what the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has bequeathed Ghanaians.
According to Mahama, the cost of living during his administration in 2016 was far better than today, despite then opposition candidate, Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, complaining of hardship in the country during his campaign.
Mahama cited the cost of kenkey which was just 1 Ghana cedi at his time, compared to the 5 Ghana cedis it is sold today, despite telling Ghanaians they were sitting on money and yet hungry.
The former President was speaking to residents of Nima in the Ayawaso East constituency of the Greater Accra region Thursday, November 28, 2024, where he asked them to vote out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to bring an end to the extreme hardship it has brought upon the nation.
“We all remember what the NPP said about the NDC government. At the time, I won’t say everything was going perfectly well but there was so much peace in the country.
“Akufo Addo said ‘we were sitting on money, yet we are hungry’ but at the time, a ball of kenkey was selling for 1 cedi. Even if I wanted to eat 3 of it to my satisfaction, all I needed was 3 cedis. But now if you want to eat 3 balls of kenkey, you would need 15 Ghana cedis and if you add one fish, that makes it 20 Ghana cedis,” he stated.
John Mahama added that the exchange rate has seen its worst performance in the Fourth Republic under Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, asking the gathering to vote wisely on Saturday, December 07, to kick the NPP out.
“At the time the NPP came to power, the dollar was at 4 cedis with the Vice President saying he has arrested the dollar, locked the keys and given it to the IGP. But today , 1 dollar is selling for 17 Ghana cedis. So, I’m reminding you the people of Ayawaso East, that they have failed. So let them pack their stuff and leave,” he further entreated.
