In a major crackdown on illegal water connections, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) Ashanti South Region, in collaboration with the Kumasi Central Police, has arrested five individuals for allegedly accessing water illegally.
The operation, conducted Wednesday, May 7, 2025 is part of GWL’s intensified efforts to curb commercial losses and ensure equitable water distribution across the region.
The suspects were apprehended after repeatedly ignoring surcharge notices for illegal connections totaling Gh₵31,803.97. While three have since settled their debts, paying Gh₵11,515.00, the remaining two remain in police custody and could face further legal action if they fail to comply.
A growing threat to water resources
Illegal connections have become a critical issue in the Ashanti Region, significantly contributing to Non-Revenue Water (NRW) – water that is lost due to theft, leaks, or inefficiencies. GWL warns that these unlawful practices drain vital revenue needed for infrastructure maintenance and service improvements.
“Illegal connections and water theft are rampant in the Ashanti Region, worsening our Non-Revenue Water challenges. Management remains committed to working with the police and media to eliminate this menace,” said the Acting Regional Chief Manager, Innocentia Kuupiel.
The manager praised the Kumasi Central Police for their support in the operation, expressing hope that the arrests would deter future violations.
The suspects were arrested in multiple locations, including Danyame, Dakodwom, Kwadaso Estate, and Santasi Apire.
GWL is calling on residents to report suspicious water connections.
Informants, according to management, are assured of confidentiality, and verified tips may even earn a reward.
“Ghana Water Limited is committed to serving its customers, but we need public support to stop illegal connections, which deprive us of critical revenue,” management stated.
With plans for further joint operations with the police, GWL has issued a stern warning – illegal connections will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full force of the law.
