Former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper George ‘Kigali’ Owu is raising concerns about the timing of the decision by management to part ways with coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum.

He said with six matches remaining, the decision could have been put on hold till after the season.

He, however, indicated that the decision may have been taken due to the desperation by the club to win this year’s Ghana Premier League.

George Owu was speaking on Onua TV‘s Agoro Fie on Tuesday following the sacking of Dr Ogum and the concomitant announcement of Dreams FC’s Karim Zito as replacement.

“It’s like we were about to finish the league and Kotoko is not entirely out of contention [for the title],” he pointed out.

“It’s unfortunate. Probably, the rationale is for them to win the league title but even if that is the case, they could have been patient. They could have waited after the league to say if he was not able to win, they part ways.”

He argued that the decision taken tells the eagerness of Asante Kotoko to win the title.

George Owu also blamed some of the players for the poor run of the club, insisting the cause may not be solely the coach.

“As a player, you have to be professional. You are working for the club and not the coach. But since he is the head, the blame comes to him. But as a player, you need to know you are working for the coach. He can bring in four or five players, but you need to give him that respect.

“If you don’t give him that respect, he will not use you. As a player, don’t think it is a certain coach that brought you, so you will not be committed under another coach. It is not the coach that pays you but the club. This is the football system.”
