A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira, has entreated previous occupants of positions that have been re-assigned at the GHS to support the new appointees in their new roles.

His comments come in the wake of reactions following the massive shake up of some 13 Programme Managers and Deputy Directors at the Service.

The GHS has undertaken another significant restructuring process with a massive shake up of some Programme Managers and Deputy Directors.

The 13 affected persons including Dr. Kezia Malm, the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr. Kwame Amponsa Achiano, EPI Manager, Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo of the National Aids Control Programme among others, have all been re-assigned effective May 19, 2025.

A letter to all Divisional and Regional Directors and signed by the Acting Director General of the Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, noted the re-assignment is part of a national strategy to strengthen the health system.

The decision has been met with mixed reaction among the populace considering most of the managers have been serving the respective roles for almost a decade.

But the former Director-General of the service, Dr. Appiah-Denkyira, says it is within the remit of a Director General to make such changes.

“Normally when officers have stayed at a particular place for some time, and for Programme Directors, sometimes we allow them to stay long because they become more something, they develop a project proposal development, for which reason, we are able to win a lot of projects, and they’re also able to get a lot of stakeholders known to the country,” he stated.

He, however, entreated the previous occupants of the roles to offer technical support to the newly appointees.

“Normally what we do is that you will let those who are moving out assist those who are coming by way of introducing them to the stakeholders and also to the nitty gritty to support the work,” he explained.
