Central Regional Fufu Pounders Association have threatened a strike action over low wage rate.

They complain the amount paid them does not commesurate the tedious nature of the job and the rising cost of living.

According to them, some chop bar operators pay them between Gh₵15.00 and GH₵20.90 a day whilst they are supposed to be paid between ₵50 and ₵70.

Even they acknowledge the availability of fufu pounding machines, the manual pounding makes the delicacy natural and tastier.

At a press conference held at Awutu Bereku, the members called on chop bar operators to increase their wages. .

They spoke with Onua News’ Nana Yaw Asare.

“We need to talk to them to increase the salary because the job is really hard,” a pounder stated.

“I’ve been pounding for about two years now. My madam pays me GH₵60.00. But in some places too, we are not paid well. If they pay us at least 70 cedis, we will also work diligently,” another suggested.

Meanwhile, some customers who have been purchasing fufu from chop bars expressed mixed feelings.

“We are drivers and when we return from Madina, we won’t get food to eat if they stop pounding so they should please increase their wage for them,” a driver pleaded on their behalf.

“It’s not their fault because things are really hard nowadays,” another added.

However, someone also asserts “they should even stop pounding and that wouldn’t affect me because my favourite is rice balls.”
