Government has outlined activities to be carried out for three-day national mourning of the victims who lost their lives in the z9 helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The crash occurred while the state officials were travelling to Obuasi in a military helicopter for a national event.
In a statement issued by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the mourning commences from Thursday, August 7 to Saturday, August 9. The activities begins with the laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Ceremonial Gardens at the front of the Presidency from 1pm on Thursday.
Members of the public, families, and friends are respectfully invited to participate.
“This solemn period is dedicated to honouring the departed and providing an opportunity for national reflection and remembrance,” the statement said.
The opportunity for the laying of flowers and lighting of candles will continue on Friday, 8 August 2025, allowing further time for citizens to express their condolences and respect.
The period of national mourning will conclude on Saturday, 9 August 2025, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” event which will begin at 5PM at the Forecourt of the State House, where all Ghanaians and families will gather to reflect on the legacy and contributions of the departed.
“These three days offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced. We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect,” Kwakye Ofosu added.
He added that further details regarding the state funeral and any additional arrangements will be communicated through official government channels.
The crash which has plunged the nation into a state of mourning claimed the lives of two senior government officials; the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The others were; Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong and National Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC, Mr. Samuel Aboagye.
The military officers involved were; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces is expected to lead the official investigation into the crash, while tributes continue to pour in for the fallen officials.
The government has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast, and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
