The Member of Parliament for the Garu Constituency, Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah, has once again appreciated the invaluable contributions of retirees (senior citizens) to the development of the area.
To commemorate this year’s Republic Day, the Garu legislator invited senior citizens across the Constituency through the Teachers’ Credit Union Association to celebrate and thank them for their sacrifices to mother Ghana as well as for contributing to the local economy.
The celebration was under the theme “Celebrating elders, honoring their legacy.”
Dr. Thomas Anabah said the occasion was dedicated to honoring persons who have retired from their duties and are in Garu, including some renowned opinion leaders.
Dr. Anabah made mention of the things that keep him awake all the time, mainly unemployment rate in the country, particularly in his constituency.
“It saddens my heart whenever I visit the constituency and see that most youth do not have jobs, and I am always working tirelessly to address the issue of unemployment”, he said.
Dr. Anabah disclosed that, the development of the Garu township with a good road network is another priority area he is working on and that soon work will start.
On Education, the MP has observed that, fresh teachers refused postings due to infrastructure deficit at the Garu Senior High school, especially accommodation.
The stalled Tamne irrigation project is another worrying situation in the agriculture sector in the Constituency.
“These are the basic things that keep me awake including the welfare of everybody. So as a political leader of the constituency, I have sleepless nights anytime due to wanting to meet the needs of the Constituency”.
“I have lobbied for a lot of projects for the constituency, including the completion of the Garu District Hospital which work will commence soon. The second thing I have lobbied for and they are working on is the road network, and the contractor is on-site, but because of the rains today, if you take your cameras there, you won’t meet him.
So ever since we took over government, we have done something, though we still need more to be done, and we are chasing the various agencies and ministries to ensure that these items come to the aid of the people of Garu”, he added.
The District Chief Executive for Garu, John Abare Abugba, said a society that doesn’t recognize its heros is not worth dying for.
“So as far as our pensioners and the aged are concerned, they are those who started everything before we came into existence, and for that matter, any activity that is geared towards supporting or recognizing them is something that anyone hearing it should be happy and ready to support.”
“This is the first of its kind happening in the constituency since I started voting in 1996; it has never happened, and the MP should be commended for the thoughtfulness because he is one and a half years in office and has already gotten some results for the constituency”, the DCE added.
Mr. Joseph Lama Essagol, the Chairman for the SSNIT Pensioners Association in Garu, also expressed excitement and joy over the invitation from the Member of Parliament for the Garu Constituency for recognizing them as retirees and reminding them of relevance of Republic Day.
On behalf of the retirees, Mr. Joseph Lama thanked the MP for the efforts he made in supporting them.
