The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of basic institutions to desist from levying final-year students who will be taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with unauthorised registration fees.
The GES caution comes on the back of allegations on social media indicating some heads of basic institutions are imposing registration fees on these pupils set to take their BECE this year.
A statement issued to that effect by the public relations unit of the GES Wednesday, February 12, 2025, indicated that the fees are illegal and ordered a refund to pupils who have already made such payments.
The statement directed the Regional Directors of Education to monitor the process and enforce the directive, warning that recalcitrant headmasters would be sanctioned accordingly.
“Regional Directors are instructed to alert District Directors to monitor the situation and caution all Heads of Basic Schools. Any Head who has collected such unauthorised fees is required to refund the monies promptly. Failure to comply will result in sanctions,” the statement read.
The GES also reminded school heads that late registration of candidates will not be permitted, urging them to ensure that all eligible students are registered within the stipulated period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Cassandra Twum Ampofo-signed statement further urged the public to take note of the directive and not allow any parent or guardian to be deceived.
