As Ghana’s general elections approach in less than five weeks, the Military High Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the electoral process.

Speaking at the annual Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Asari Bekoe, affirmed the Ghana Armed Forces’ capability to address any security threats.

However, he emphasized that preserving the peace and stability currently enjoyed by the nation should remain a priority for all citizens.

The exercise took place on Friday, November 1, at the Army Peace Operations Training School in Bundase, with senior leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces in attendance.

Among the units participating in the demonstration were the 5th Infantry Battalion, Special Forces Brigade, 15 Armoured Brigade, and the 66 Artillery Regiment, showcasing the full spectrum of military assets and capabilities.

Armored vehicles, machine guns, artillery, and other sophisticated weaponry were deployed in a realistic combat simulation, underlining the Ghana Armed Forces’ preparedness to defend the nation.

During the exercise, front-line soldiers demonstrated their ability to swiftly respond to emerging threats by gathering intelligence and engaging with simulated terrorist forces.

The soldiers, supported by air cover from the Ghana Air Force, successfully neutralized threats, securing the simulated battlefield. Although the operation was intense, only a few soldiers sustained minor injuries, with one recorded casualty, underscoring the realism of the simulation.

This exercise forms a critical part of the training program for students from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Course 46. It evaluated the operational readiness of the military’s battle groups and joint task forces, ensuring they are equipped to defend Ghana’s territorial integrity.

Key elements of an Infantry Battalion were on display, supported by various specialized units. The Ghana Navy also played a vital role by safeguarding the nation’s coastal borders, coordinating with the Army and Air Force to form a seamless joint operation across land, sea, and air.

In his remarks, Air Vice Marshal Bekoe called on all Ghanaians to play their part in safeguarding the nation’s peace, especially in the days leading up to the elections.

“With just a few days to this year’s election, we need to protect our democracy and peace as a nation,” he urged. “Let us be mindful of our choice of words, as what we say has the potential to either make or unmake this country.”

The call for peace was echoed by other high-ranking officials who emphasized that maintaining stability during this crucial period is a shared responsibility.

The Ghana Armed Forces, they said, stand ready to act decisively against any actions that threaten national security, but they also believe that sustainable peace can only be achieved through collective efforts from all citizens.

The Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration represents a clear message from the Armed Forces that, while the military is prepared to protect the nation, true security stems from a united commitment to peace and democracy.
