Seven out of the 15 district assemblies and municipalities in the Upper East region have discovered mineral resources.
Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, who made the revelation in an interaction with journalists at the proposed Bolgatanga airport site noted that gold tops the discoveries made in the region.
During the Saturday, March 29, 2025, interaction with the media, the Regional Minister noted that the Bolgatanga Airport, when constructed, will aid buyers of the gold to easily transport their mineral products to other parts of the country with ease.
He, however, called on stakeholders to assist the region in establishing the airport.
According to the Minister, the Upper East region is the gateway to neighbouring Togo and Burkina Faso and believes the building of the airport will go a long way to help the country.
“This region, all of a sudden, we have discovered minerals around. Out of the 15 municipal district assemblies, we have about seven of them that have this deposit. And if they are having this deposit, it means that there’s business to do.
“And then, when they do the mining, they will need faster means to be able to send their gold to the national level without being disturbed by armed robberies.
“There’s a need for us to quicken things to improve upon things. Upper East is a gateway to Burkiana Faso and Togo. Our airport will be more lucrative,” he stated.
