A legal practitioner, Amanda Clinton, has said that the arrest of the Asante Akyem North Lawmaker, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, creates a diplomatic nightmare for Ghana.
She expressed the view that Ghana should have been given a heads-up about the arrest, but America’s policy is not to alert when dealing with politically exposed persons.
Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong has been detained at the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
This was disclosed by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Djietror, in a Facebook post on May 12.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that, the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the post read.
It added that, “The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter.”
Ohene Kwame Frimpong is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and politician. Frimpong contested the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate and defeated the incumbent member of parliament, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.
Speaking on this matter on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, May 16, Amanda Clinton said, “Ghana is in a diplomatic nightmare.
“Ghana could have had a heads up, but American policy is not to give a heads up when dealing with a politically exposed person.”
Also speaking on this matter, Energy expert, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, said that the arrest of Kwame Ohene Frimpong is disturbing for the image of Ghana.
He said that the allegations, if proven, put Ghana in an uncomfortable situation
“Whenever an MP is involved in this allegation, it is a bit disturbing. We live among a lot of people. The question now becomes, do we really know the people we are working with? If the allegation we are hearing is true, then it is disturbing.
“It puts Ghaha on the map that I am not comfortable with,” he also said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, May 16.
