Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant to facilitate critical repair works on its transmission pipeline, a move expected to affect water supply in parts of the Kumasi Metropolis and adjoining communities.

In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, the Ashanti Regional Management of Ghana Water said the repair works are necessary to safeguard the integrity of the transmission system and ensure the continuous and reliable operation of the treatment plant.

According to the company, the Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

Ghana Water explained that the maintenance exercise forms part of efforts to enhance the reliability and sustainability of water service delivery in the region.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience the temporary shutdown may cause to residents and businesses and advised customers to store enough water to meet their needs during the period of interruption.

Management expressed appreciation for the patience, understanding and cooperation of consumers while the essential maintenance works are undertaken.

Ghana Water assured the public that water production and supply would be restored immediately upon completion of the repair works.

The company reiterated its commitment to providing reliable water services and indicated that the maintenance exercise is intended to improve the long-term efficiency of the water supply system serving Kumasi and surrounding communities.

Residents and institutions in affected areas are therefore encouraged to make adequate preparations ahead of the scheduled shutdown.
