Private legal practitioner Osman Alhassan has questioned the relevance and motive behind the press conference held by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

He contended that her public remarks may not influence how Ghanaians ultimately view her legacy.

Justice Torkonoo addressed the nation on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 offering a detailed account of the process leading to her suspension and raising concerns about fairness and transparency.

Her statements have sparked widespread public and legal debate. But speaking in an interview on 3FM Sunrise on June 26th, Mr. Alhassan wondered the motive of the Chief Justice’s public appearance, whether it was aimed at painting herself as a victim of political interference.

“Does she want us Ghanaians to think that she is a victim of some political prosecution? Is that what it is? But even if that is the case, that is not what we Ghanaians will judge her by. We are not going to judge her by whatever happens in these proceedings.” He said.

According to him, the public’s lasting opinion of Justice Torkonoo will not be shaped by her suspension process or any public explanations, but rather by her performance while in office.

“Ghanaians will judge her by what she did while she was in there as Chief Justice, as they saw.” Osman Alhassan added.

He further warned that her continued public commentary on her removal process could further expose her to the very constitutional provisions she appears to challenge.

“No matter that a constitutional provision is deemed to be improper or wrong, until it is amended, it remains as such,” he stated.

“So, any advocacy should be for the amendment, not a violation of what stands now. Unfortunately, that is what the Chief Justice is doing, and the more she does that, the more she exposes herself to the prescription that the Constitution gives for her removal,” he said.
