The death is being reported of boxer Clement Ike Quartey.
Clement Quartey won Ghana’s first medal at the Olympic Games in 1960 in Rome, Italy.
He beat the likes of Mohammed Boubekeur of Romania, Khalid Al-Karkhi of Iraq and Kim Deuk-Bong of South Korea on his way to the final. He had a walkover against Poland’s Marian Kasprzyk to reach the final.
He was, however, defeated in the final by Czechoslovakian Bohumil Nemecek to the Gold medal.
Quartey’s Silver is, therefore, Ghana’s only – and highest – medal in the history of the Games.
Clement Quartey made amends a couple of years later to win Gold at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia in 1962.
He is reported to have died in the United Kingdom on Saturday at 86.
He was the elder brother of former world welterweight champion Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey.
