The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has praised the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) for its role in the postponement of the GHC1 energy sector levy implementation.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ministry of Finance had earlier announced June 9, 2025, as the implementation date after the President’s assent to the law on Thursday, May 5.
However, COMAC raised concerns about the impact on its members’ businesses and, in a statement on May 8, 2025, requested the government to reconsider the date.
The Ministries of Energy and Green Transition and Finance, together with the GRA and NPA, met with COMAG leadership to address their concerns, and a new implementation date of June 16 was agreed.
Commenting on the development on TV3’s BigIssue on NewDay Monday, June 9, 2025, the NPA CEO, Mr. Tameklo, noted that COMAG had genuine concerns and it was beneficial that they brought it up for discussion.
According to him, CoMAG members weren’t against the levy in itself, but rather the date of implementation which they felt would affect their business.
“And if you read the statement carefully, CoMAC is really not against the GHC1, it is the implementation because to them, it is going to bring additional financial burden to them and in the circumstance, felt that it appeared more like a fiat. The Finance Minister’s intervention to allow the whole thing to move it to next week will allow them to put their finance in place,” he added.
To him, the development was going to ease his work for him at the NPA. “To me, this is welcoming. What it has done is that it has made my work a bit easier for me at NPA. Because the implementation is at my end, the downstream and this would have created a problem but thankfully, the Finance Minister saw wisdom in the concerns they raised and has agreed,” Edudzi pointed out.
