The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, says the government has raised one million Ghana Cedis (GHC1,000,000.00) through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GetFund) to complete a stalled Lecture Hall project at the Regional Maritime University (RMU).
He has also disclosed that the Ministry has approved another one million Ghana Cedis (GHC1,000,000.00) towards an auditorium complex project in the school to enhance teaching and learning.
He has further revealed that review of the feasibility study of the University by the Korea EXIM Bank has been completed, increasing the project cost from one hundred and fifty million dollars (US$150, 000,000) to one hundred and seventy-three million dollars (US$173, 000,000) and the Ministry has taken the necessary steps to sign the loan facility for the modernization of the school.
Completion of these projects according to the sector minister, would provide RMU with training ship, stimulators, lecture theatres, civil works and capacity building for effective training.

The Saboba lawmaker who was speaking at the 33rd Board of Governors Meeting of RMU on Friday June 27, maintained that RMU remains a cornerstone institution in the region, hence the commitment of the government to drive the development of the university in fulfillment of the regional cooperation to train and produce highly skilled and professional citizens to take advantage of the global maritime and shipping industry as well as the blue economy.
“Ghana is committed to position RMU as a maritime training institution of choice and will continue to collaborate with member states to ensure the progress of the university “.
“In this regard, the Resetting Ghana Agenda of government is utilizing every available opportunity to refocusing Ghana’s Socio-economic development trajectory; that is the Big PUSH and activation of a transformative 24-Hour economy model,” he emphasized.
Mr. Bukari Nikpe, was grateful to the university’s management for bringing finality to the issue of the suspended Vice Chancellor, stressing that a lesson is learnt to avoid such pitfalls in the future.
Chancellor, Board Chairman of RMU who doubles as the Minister of Transport and Aviation of the republic of Sierra Leone, Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, in his remarks lauded government of Ghana and other member states for their numerous and immense contributions towards the development of RMU.
He reiterated that the contributions will position RMU to provide essential maritime education and training whilst empowering young professionals to take on critical roles in the maritime sector across the region and beyond.
