The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has petitioned the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to sanction its General Secretary, David Tenkorang Twum.
In a statement issued by the GNAFF leadership on Monday, August 25, 2025, it said Tenkorang Twum had derogated farmers and the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during an interview on an Accra-based radio station.
According to the statement, the comments by the GRNMA’s General Secretary, “which have since become public, were highly offensive and unbecoming of a professional leader who is expected to uphold integrity, respect, and public trust.”
The Association says it had earlier issued a release to condemn the act and called on the General Secretary to retract and render an unqualified apology to all farmers and fishers within 24 hours, but “regrettably, Dr. Tenkorang has failed to comply with this directive, thereby aggravating the injury caused to our members and deepening public disaffection.”
It further stated that Tenkorang-Twum’s conduct “brings the nursing and midwifery profession into disrepute and undermines the high ethical standards expected of practitioners under your regulation.”
It is therefore calling on the leadership of the GRNMA to probe the conduct of their General Secretary in line with their disciplinary procedures and apply the appropriate sanctions prescribed under their professional code of ethics to safeguard the integrity of the nursing and midwifery profession.
The GNAFF is also calling on the GRNMA to order Tenkorang Twum to issue an unqualified apology to farmers and fishermen, and the Minister of Health, which they believe would help “uphold professional standards, protect public confidence in nursing and midwifery, and send a clear message that abuse of public trust and derogatory conduct will not be tolerated.”
The demand follows a recent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, where a nurse was allegedly assaulted over a supposed case of medical negligence.
A social activist, popularly known as Ralph, recorded a video at the facility and shared it on social media, showing friends who had been involved in an accident lying in the emergency ward for several minutes without allegedly receiving attention.
During an altercation with the hospital staff, Ralph was seen hitting the hand of a nurse who had responded to his complaints.
Subsequent videos on social media showed the nurse lying on a bed with bandages on both hands, a development that the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) took seriously.
The GRNMA gave the government an ultimatum to arrest Ralph, who was also seen in a video on social media shaking hands with the Minister of Health, Mr. Akandoh, who had visited the scene to seek a resolution to the matter.
In what many have described as a political twist to the matter, the GRNMA accused the Minister of condoning Ralph’s act merely by shaking hands with him and whispering into the Minister’s ear upon his arrival at the facility.
These insinuations led to Tenkorang Twum’s distasteful comments against the Minister, which also involved farmers.
Meanwhile, a committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and bring it to a finality.
