The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GH¢20 million towards support for Ghanaians affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a press statement dated 26 August 2026, the Ministry said it had become aware of media reports suggesting MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation, an announcement reportedly linked to an interview granted by the telecommunication giant’s Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson.
“The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer, however, we respectfully decline,” the statement said.
The Ministry said the Mahama administration had made adequate provision for ongoing evacuations and reintegration of affected Ghanaians and was therefore unable to accept the offer.
According to the statement, the government’s position had earlier been conveyed directly to MTN’s Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on 14 August 2026.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing humanitarian evacuations and reintegration financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way, and pledged to present a comprehensive account of the total cost of evacuations to the public once the exercise concludes.
It further stated that government would continue to create the best business ecosystem for all international brands operating in Ghana, irrespective of country of origin, adding that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains its utmost priority.
