At Kokrobite, a suburb near Accra in the Greater Accra region, police have allegedly assaulted some residents, where six people, including taxi drivers and a passenger, were injured.

Four others, including the chairman of the Kokrobite Drivers Association, have since been taken into police custody following the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred during a funeral wake-keeping ceremony at the Kokrobite Goil Filling Station.

The taxi drivers, according to reports, were directing a hearse carrying the body of a colleague’s wife to ease traffic congestion on the Kokrobite road when police officers allegedly assaulted them with sticks.

The officers claimed the drivers were blocking the road with their vehicles, prompting the confrontation.

However, the injured drivers vehemently denied the allegations, stating they were simply doing their civic duty to manage traffic flow. “We don’t know our crime,” they said. “We were just directing the hearse from creating traffic, and the police officers just came and started beating us with sticks.”

Aside from Saturday, September 20, 2025’s incident, the taxi drivers alleged that the officers have been harassing them, particularly when they don’t comply with their demands for money, a situation they said is not peculiar to them but commercial motorcycle ‘okada’ riders as well.

The drivers have been telling Onua News’ Nana Yaw Asare that they demand the intervention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Minister of Interior to take swift action against the officers involved, as well as their commander. Failure to do so, they warn, might compel them to take matters into their own hands.

Meanwhile, the officers have refused to comment to the media when journalists approached them to take their side of the story.
