Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration, scheduled for this morning, June 18, 2024.
This Protest is organized by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, who is leading the charge against the sale of 4 major hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi and Minister for Food and Agriculture.
The hotels at the center of the controversy include Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.
Ablakwa has raised serious concerns about the sale process, citing conflicts of interest, procurement breaches, and lack of due process.
The demonstration will begin at Labadi Beach Hotel and proceed to the Jubilee House, the seat of government, symbolizing a direct appeal to the nation’s leadership.
Ablakwa, who has also filed a petition with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for an investigation, aims to halt the sale and bring attention to what he describes as “state capture.”
In his recent statements, Ablakwa emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the management of state assets, reflecting widespread public concern over the issue.
“All is set for the ‘Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration.’ We concluded discussions with the Ghana Police Service and are ready to march. Enough of the State Capture!” he declared.
The public response has been robust, with numerous groups and individuals expressing their support for the cause. This demonstration is expected to be a major event, drawing attention to the broader issues of governance and the protection of public assets in Ghana.
