Bawku Central lawmaker, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed the need to protect assets belonging to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

He says the scheme which is already being endangered, will not be able to pay pensioners in future if its assets are not protected and dissipated in the way and manner the government wants it to go.

Speaking with TV3’s Noble Crosby Annan Tuesday, June 18, 2024, during the “Hands off Our Hotels Demonstration”, the legislator who expressed satisfaction with the turnout implored all Ghanaians to participate in the protest to protect SSNIT’s assets.

“It’s an impressive gathering. The issues are quite clear. Accountability, fight against state draft, and holding government accountable. I believe that we must all fight to protect state assets, land, corporations,” he urged.

Mr. Ayariga also advised the government to stop the sale of the hotels to secure the future of pensioners in the country.

“I believe that government should stop this transaction form taking place. And it is not just about that, it is also the fact that it is owned by SSNIT and all of us who are workers and contribute to the scheme. We need to do everything to protect the viability of the scheme.

“A lot of actuarial studies are showing that the scheme is endangered and so when we begin to dissipate the assets of the scheme the way we are doing now, we are endangering the scheme and in the future we’ll not be able to honour people’s pensions,” he stated.
