The Accra High Court will today, Thursday, October 15, 2026, hear an application for bail pending appeal filed by former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.

Wontumi is seeking to be released from custody while he challenges his conviction and 20-year custodial sentence over illegal mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

His legal team filed the application in August, shortly after his conviction.

The application was first listed for hearing on August 19, 2026, but could not be heard as both the applicant and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, were absent. The court later indicated the presiding judge was unavailable for the rest of that week.

Today’s sitting is expected to see the defence argue why bail should be granted pending the determination of the appeal. The Attorney-General is opposing the application on grounds that Wontumi is a flight risk.
